Update on SBE Conference series

The SBE partners and representatives of the WSBE17 Hong Kong and Gothenburg WSBE20 conferences, plus Ivan Cerda (Chile) and Thomas Lûtzkendorf (Germany) met in Paris during 11-12 October to review the 10 SBE19 proposals that have been received and also to discuss detailed plans for WSBE2020. One point of immediate interest is that the partners decided to extend the eligibility period for the conferences backward, to 1 September 2018. This was done in view of two applications for events in the Fall of 2018, and a decision that such a move would not create a problem for other events.

The WSBE17 Conference in Hong Kong was a major success

This conference was the latest global event in the SBE conference series. The series operates on a 3-year cycle and WSBE17 was preceded by 20 national events during 2016. About 1800 persons attended the conference itself, which was primarily sponsored by the HK Green Building Council. Many members or friends of iiSBE participated as speakers and/or delegates, including Thomas Lützkendorf, Joseph Li, Andrea Moro, Antonin Lupisek, Greg Foliente, Luis Bragança, Nils Larsson, Jean Cinq-Mars, Bob Bach, Serge Salat, Mark Gorgolewski, Ray Cole and George Baird.

SBE Buildings Challenge at WSBE17

Parallel sessions at WSBE17 in Hong Kong will include two 90-minute workshops focused on Building Performance Evaluation (BPE). The sessions are sponsored by iiSBE and will take place on 6 June (Session 42) and Session 84 (7 June).

Building Performance Evaluation compares performance in key aspects (e.g. energy, emissions, water, IEQ, cost) that was predicted at the design stage through simulations and other predictive methods and tools, with the actual performance as assessed during the operation of the building, after at least two years of operation.

SBE partners launch international survey on effective climate change measures

CIB, UNEP-SBCI and FIDIC have decided to develop and implement a large-scale international survey on effective climate change mitigation measures in 2016. The content will benefit from the experience of the small pilot survey carried out by iiSBE in late 2015.

The 2016-17 SBE series of conferences

The process for establishing the 2016 SBE conferences is well underway. Proposals have been received and approved for national / regional events in Dubai, Malta, Hamburg, Porto, Zurich, Prague, Tallinn and Helsinki, and Cairo. More proposals are being prepared for Malmö, Manila and Torino, and others are also expected.

The global event for 2017, WSBE17 Hong Kong, was selected in October and that major event is tentatively scheduled for 5-7 June of 2017.

The deadline for SBE16 proposals is 20 February, and all conference organizers have been invited to attend a meeting of conference organizers in Paris on 5 and 6 March. Representatives of the series owners, CIB, iiSBE, UNEP-SBCI and FIDIC as well as some of the series advisors will also attend.

The purpose of the meeting is for the various organizers to meet each other and to discuss matters of mutual interest and concern. We will report soon after this meeting.
